 La voce di Macy Gray è una cosa meravigliosa. Può essere intima come
le ore piccole oppure eccitante come un night-club gremito;
sorprendentemente dolce in una canzone, dura e rauca in un'altra. Il paragone più ovvio
che si può fare e' con Billie Holiday, ma troviamo tracce anche di altre
cantanti, sia leggendarie che poco conosciute: Betty Davis, Nina Simone,
Karen Dalton, Tina Turner. Tuttavia, alla fine, Macy Gray non assomiglia
nessuno se non a sè stessa. Macy riesce a creare un mélange musicale, tra
sonorità soul, hip-hop, R&B, funk, rock e stomp di vecchio stampo.
"ON HOW LIFE IS" suona come una passeggiata attraverso i quartieri della
Los Angeles di oggi : se apri la finestra potrai sentire le sue radici

per il sesso e non se vergogna...Che sia il ritmo funky accoppiato alle rauche parole di incoraggiamento di Macy in "Do Something" il primo singolo, o la fumosa ballata "Still" deliziosa, straziante e profonda che richiama alla memoria l'Aretha dei primi tempi, il risultato è un album riempito fino all' Orlo dalla voce irresistibilmente sabbiosa e rilassante di Macy. I testi, tutti scritti da Macy, sono principalmente storie della sua vita. In un'intervista Macy ha dichiarato: "Il disco e' un insieme di frammenti di cose che mi sono capitate, che mi hanno dato l'ispirazione di scrivere. E' "ON HOW LIFE IS" , e' la mia vita. Non e' come se parlassi del mondo intero perché in realtà non ho grandi messaggi. Il disco è ispirato solo su ciò che ho fatto, e spero che la gente ci si possa immedesimare." Macy Gray The voice of Macy Gray is something special. She could be tender and soft like the hours of the night or exciting and strong as well as an overcrowded club or very sweet in a song and hard and warm in another Well at first apperance Macy can be compared to Mrs Billie Holiday, but in her hoarse voice we can find also something of Betty Davis, Nina Simone, Karen Dalton Tina Turner, anyhow at the end she is noboby of them but she is only herself. Macy with her songs is able to drive among several musical styles, she passes from R&B to soul,hip-hop to funk, rock and stomp, and always with a lot of creativeness and joy. Well, "ON HOW LIFE IS ", is looking like a walking through Los Angels streets, where if You open the windows You can feel her roots and her inspiration 
A very well made recording puts together and express the emotions and
eclectical album's arrangements.
Since the opening track " Why didn't You call me " until the last and very beautiful "The Letter ", the feeling is so spontaneous, natural, without any hurry. A special attention has to be paid to the song "SEX O MATIC ", where Macy confess without any problem or shame her love and passion for sex.. Anyhow the record of Macy, even if shifting between funky coupled with her warm encouraging words of " DO SOMETHING ", or the smoky and terrible deeply delicate ballad "STILL", which recall the early Aretha, the result of the album is an album full of Macy nice relaxing and particular hoarse voice. Lyrics are all written by Macy and are mainly stories of her life.. Macy declared in an interwiev released few month ago : " The album is part of my life experiences which gives me the inspiration to write it, and as a matter of fact ON HOW LIFE IS is my life. Well, I'm not talking about the whole world, oh no, even because I've no so important messages. Albun is inspired only by facts which really happened to me and I hope that people will like and to feel a part of them."
