Connolly dopo il successo di Tutto chò che muore, ritorna alla grande con questo nuovo romanzo, dove fa muovere il nostro Charlie Bird Parker in quello scenario magico che è il Maine. Grandi boschi, cieli blu e tersi che ti cadono addosso, neve in quantità esagerata e mare in tempesta che prende a schiaffi una delle più belle coste dell'East Atlantic ed una miriade di personaggi caratteristici di ogni fascia sociale dell'america disillusa. Nella sua lotta al crimine Charlie questa volta è aiutato da una coppia di amici Louis ed Anagel, una coppia Gay e multirazziale. Louis grosso e tozzo ma con un intuito incredibile, Angel bello come una gazzella, agile e flessusoso come un puma, ma spietato contro la cattiveria. Tutti insieme cercano di scoprire chi sta dando una mano al lavoro della camera mortuaria del paese riempedola di corpi trucidati e mostrusamente mutilati, corpi di donne, uomini e bambini uccisi solo perchè una mente malata non riesce a placare la sete di sangue.... Charlie Parker si muove protetto dalle voce delle anime amiche della moglie e della figlia che ogni tanto gli appaiono nei suoi sonni agitati e gli sorridono, gli parlano e gli danno forza per continuare...Charlie combatte i fantasmi del passato che si materializzano e lasciano sulla loro strada una scia di sangue .... Un bel libro ricco di colpi di scena, un pò noir, ma scritto molto bene e che si legge con ritmo. Un libro sicuramente da leggersi durante le serate fredde e nebbiose di quest'inverno un pò strano. Un libro che invita a restare in casa a condizione che le finestre siano ben chiuse !! 
L'irrestibile ascesa di Harry Starks
di Jake Arnott Finalmente un libro pieno di verve, di brio e di ritmo. Il personaggio di questo libro, Harry Starks, malavitoso della Londra a cavallo tra gli anni 60 e 70, si muove in una City fumosa, agitata, violenta nevrotica ed allo stesso tempo moralista, bacchettona e ipocrita. Una Londra che prende il the alle 5 del pomeriggio e dentro l'armadio ha gli scheletri, una Londra che sguinzaglia policemen in ogni angolo di Soho e poi di notte si spoglia e si traveste da sgualdrina... Leggendo questo libro, sembra di vivere le atmosfere di quel bel disco inizio anni 70 di David Bowie "Alladin Sane " e più esattamente sembra di vivere come i personaggi di Drive in a Saturday e Panic in Detroit Il nostro malfattore simpatico, anche se con crisi schizofreniche, che si alterna tra il mazzolare teppistelli locali che non pagano il pizzo, noleggiare swinging boys ai politici viziosi, gestire il fiorente mercato della pornagrafia londinese, si muove nella swinging London assetata di novità, libertà e desiderosa di scrollarsi di dosso la maledizione del Niente sesso siamo inglesi!!! riuscendo ad ottenere sempre ciò che vuole. Harry laurendo in sociologia, si circonda di personaggi singolari che lo aiutano nelle sue scorribande punitive. Ama ragazzi più giovani di lui che prima gli danno il cuore e poi lo fregano...ed alla fine si intestardisce a voler scoprire l'assassino di un suo giovane amante, ragazzo squillo poi, fatto a pezzi e separato in varie valigie. Harry grande mente, si muove come un gatto, sempre in prima linea e sempre alla ricerca di un pò di successo Un libro permeato da un ritmo frenetico, anfetaminizzato, sempre di corsa e che non ti stanca mai Un libro mai piatto, un libro che assomiglia ai migliori o peggiori film di Quentin Tarantino a cavallo tra il pulp o gli splatter movies.. Bravo Arnott, storico e testimone postumo del periodo "marrone" Inglese che non tornerà più La BBC ne ha tratto una miniserie televisiva che non credo approderà in Italia Paul the Honeybear |

A very restless soul This time Charlie is alone and he is still seat dowm and lick his wounds which will never be reliefed. The lost of the his wife and daughter is still carving a deep wound in his soul and there is nothing he can do, just to sit and starve, but.. The half-hearted investigator, Bird agrees to track down the ex-husband of Rita Purdue and get the child support she has coming to her. And when Rita and her son are killed and the finger of suspicion points to Billy Purdue, Bird still feels a moral obligation to find the young man, even though he can't believe he's a killer. Then the bodies begin piling up, among them a bunch of Cambodian killers, some mob-connected Boston gangsters, a couple of people to whom Billy turned for refuge, and an old woman in a nursing home who dies with the name of a bogeyman on her lips--the mysterious Caleb Kyle. It's not the first time Bird's heard that name: his grandfather, who was also a cop, spent his last years trying to track down the legendary monster whose name was always used to scare kids into doing what they were supposed to. And it's not only his grandfather's ghost that haunts Bird as he attempts to solve the mystery of who Billy Purdue really is; the spirits of his dead wife and child urge him on in his attempt to find justice for Rita and her child as well. The scenario of this story is the Maine. Landscape of Maine's woods and atlantic coasts smal village and large city are the curtains of Bird life on the soul stage. In this adventure Bird is helped by two good friends, Louis and Angel two gays guys very close to him and very affectionate. They give him the possibility to go ahead in this story and to solve it.... A great book, rich of action and feelings.

First You read the book then You close the yes and the cores will take place into yr head. You will be placed into a Swinging London in the 60's, but forget London of Cliff Richard and Summer Holiday, more a London of the shadows; gangsters, corrupt police, rent boys and a decayed and decadent aristocracy. This is the story of Harry Starks, club owner, racketeer, porn king. He is violent and sadistic, a believer in Queen and country, Judy Garland fan, depressive and gay. Harry is pictured as a social climber hungry of fame and money, but but there is also soemthing special in his so damned soul He has a heart, Yes he has got a heart and good feeling, even if his skizophrenic attacks are very frequent in his life. Arnott has done his research, the decadent and corrupt peer of the realm has echoes of the scandalous Profumo affair. The protagonist of this book is not only Harry Sparks, but also all the other people involved.
